Getting
away with your spouse is something that I think a doctor should prescribe. It is all too easy to get caught up in the daily grind and let the weeks or even months slip away without really connecting with your significant other. With my busy work schedule, I’m guilty of not being as present as I should be sometimes. As luck would have it, grandma offered to watch the kids for a weekend.
We agreed
to take grandma up on her offer immediately. While she is always supportive and watches the kids here and there, it’s typically for a few hours so we can grab dinner or a movie. When she mentioned an entire weekend, I think we were both a little in shock. No worries, we came to our senses quickly and inked (not penciled) it on the calendar. Then my wife and I looked at each other and, at just about the same time, asked one another where we were heading.
We
started big. Why don’t we go to NYC or maybe head to Seattle for the weekend. We’ve been to the big apple many times in the past but I’ve only been out to Seattle once. It’s always been on the list to get away to for a long weekend. Then we started thinking…if we only have from Friday at noon until about dinner time on Sunday, going somewhere that requires a flight probably isn’t the best idea. We pulled back our search just a bit because really, any weekend away is a good weekend.

The Midwest
has quite a few nice little getaway places. Since we live about an hour outside of Chicago, we thought about just heading into the city. The problem with that is we’ve been there and done that – many times. We were looking for something a little different. After researching a few bed and breakfast places throughout Illinois and Wisconsin, we ultimately decided on Milwaukee. I know, you can barely contain your excitement!
Milwaukee
probably doesn’t jump to the top of the getaway list for most people, but it has quite a bit going for it. It’s on Lake Michigan, has a healthy restaurant and bar scene, has theater, nice hotels, museums, and professional sports. To be honest, we splurged a bit. We booked two nights at the Pfister Hotel (you can check it out HERE), bought theater tickets for Friday night, and are toying with the idea of going to the Brewer’s game Saturday night. With most weekends consisting of dinner at the dining room table and half a movie on Netflix after the kids fall asleep, Milwaukee is sounding really nice!
We’re a few weeks out from our weekend getaway but I’ll be sure to keep you posted. Until then, you should set some time aside with your significant other. Whether you spend some cash or not, make sure you take a break and enjoy the things in life that matter.
