What is a Budget (R) Rated?

You’ve likely heard the word Budget before. Maybe you’ve tried using one in the past, or maybe not…Either way, I’m going to make sure you’re comfortable with just what exactly a Budget is. Let’s start with the definition of a Budget from our good friend Google. According to the Oxford Dictionary, a Budget is an estimate of income and expenditures for a set period of time. Hmmm…those are some fairly intimidating words. I mean, who says expenditures on a regular basis? Let’s break the idea of a Budget down and relate it to something most people can get their heads around.

First up, an estimate of income is just a fancy way of saying how much money you make. Then we have expenditures, or the ways your money goes out the door. Some people refer to these as expenses. As far as a set period of time goes, that’s just the window of time you’re looking at (a day, week, month, year, etc.). For reference, I track how much I make (after taxes and pretax deductions – like a 401k) and how much I spend on a monthly basis.

Now it’s time for the analogy – my wife’s ass!

Here is the What Is A Budget R Rated version! Before the analogy, let me make a few things clear. Number one, I’m very fond of my wife’s ass. Number two, my wife has a sense of humor and is ok with me talking about her ass. Ok, now on with the analogy.

My wife LOVES tortilla chips (almost as much as I love her ass). It turns out that my wife’s ass loves tortilla chips as much as she does. The more she eats, the bigger her booty gets (I’m not necessarily complaining). In order for my wife to keep her ass within the confines of her jeans, she needs to expend some of those calories ingested from eating all those chips.

You can think of your Budget a bit like my wife’s ass. If she eats more tortilla chips than she can burn off, her backside grows. If you earn more money than you spend, your bank account grows. Your Budget is just a tool to help you understand your money ins and outs each day, week, month, or year (I manage mine over a month). If only my bank account could grow the way my wife’s ass does when she eats all those tortilla chips…
