How I Made Over $500k
Is something I really never thought I’d write about. For many years, Retiring by 45 posts focused more on how money and finances play into my day-to-day life. It wasn’t until I made a ton of money and then decided to walk away from that income that I thought about putting my experience into posts.
I’ve decided to write about how I made an incredible living for two reasons. First, I’ve come to realize that through many roles, experiences, opportunities, and stressors, I have amassed a great deal of REAL WORLD experience. I’ll touch on the importance of experience in much more detail in future posts. The experience I have CAN help others that are either struggling financially or benefit those that would like to improve their current situation.
The second reason I decided to write about how I made over $500k annually is that I made that money WITHOUT having a side gig. In fact, my side gig (really a hobby which is this website) suffered. I put next to zero time into the website and new posts. Much of the internet would make you believe that earning more money is next to impossible without having a side gig. That’s just not so.
Before jumping in
I will say the idea of side gigs isn’t a bad thing. If that’s your thing or you’re making money at it, that’s awesome! In my experience, I’ve seen side gigs COST people hundreds if not thousands of dollars per year and end up not returning anything. Yes, blogs can be cheap to run and bring in lots of money. No, I do not believe you can do it with less than $150 per year.
Here’s why – despite cheap web hosting, other expenses do creep in. For example, if you set up a business to limit your liability (people are sue crazy these days so a corporation or LLC is a good idea), you’ll spend a few hundred dollars per year setting it up and staying in good standing with your state. Then, you’ll need to have somebody do your taxes for the business. That’ll run somewhere between $400 and $800 per year. Oh, and no, you haven’t run any boosted posts or ads for your content yet.
Personally, I spend close to $1,800 per year to have GOOD hosting, have a professional complete my taxes, pay for plugins that allow my website to be appealing and fully functional, and run a few boosted posts. I could easily spend $3,000 or more each year on retiringby45.com alone. Now, for those of you looking to make more money with a side gig –
HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED THE IDEA THAT YOU COULD MAKE AN EXTRA 10, 15, OR EVEN 25 PERCENT MORE PER YEAR IN THE JOB YOU’RE ALREADY IN?
So, if you make $40,00 per year, you could add anywhere between $4,000 and $10,000 per year WITHOUT spending any money! What would you do with several thousands of extra dollars each year?

BACK TO THE PROBLEM AT HAND
The internet says you have to have a side gig to make real money. That is simply not true. I’m going to take you through FIVE fundamental concepts that I leveraged to go from making $25,000 per year (without benefits) to over $500,000 per year with full benefits (including a car). The concepts are simple, straight-forward, and effective. More than that, they are free.
I’m not asking you to sign up for a class or pay for templates. Nope, I’m simply going to share the things that I did (and what I sought out in others before I’d promote them) to become more and more valuable to the companies I worked for. And, the more valuable you are to the company you work for, the more they are willing to pay you to make sure you’re happy and keep doing a great job for them.
